The Undefeated is seeking a General Editor to run the Rhoden Fellowship, a program created to support the growth of students studying journalism/communications at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The program is named for William Rhoden, who is a columnist for The Undefeated and was an award-winning New York Times sports columnist. The Rhoden Fellowship aims to create a journalism pipeline for students interested in all phases of the industry: sports journalism, video, design, editing, sales, and public relations.

The General Editor will be the initial point of contact with those doing business with the program. They will have an understanding of the editorial mission of The Undefeated and the Fellowship and, along with Rhoden, be an editorial voice and mentor to the students. The position requires someone with top notch administrative skills. This position will be the liaison with relevant parties that may include: various media outlets, sports teams/players, event venues, hotels, and journalism departments at their HBCUs.

The Undefeated is located in Washington D.C. This position will be remote until the company determines it is safe to return to the office. Once safe, it will require the candidate live in the city or relocate for the position.


  • Serve as the day-to-day contact for the Rhoden Fellows - the primary initial contact for those who are doing business with the program
  • Serve as the primary contact between the Fellowship and The Undefeated
  • Create a curriculum for the Fellowship each year to keep the Fellows engaged and building their skills
  • Be the point person for running any events, symposiums, screenings that the Fellowship hosts or takes part in
  • Runs point on all budget matters related to the Fellowship - coordinating with The Undefeated on finance issues
  • Liaison with the HR department in all matters related to the Fellows
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate contact lists for the program directors, faculty advisors and Fellows, information about the Fellows, in what media outlets they are being placed, and what projects they are working on. Documents any problems and solutions that arise in the process.
  • Manages the Rhoden Fellows calendar, creating a list of potential coverage opportunities
  • Work with the HBCU editor on assigning HBCU content and arranging coverage around HBCU events
  • Manage the rollout and ongoing operations of the Rhoden Fellows, such as acceptance and rejection letters, communicating between program directors, faculty advisor and Fellows, and monitoring the Initiative's budget and expenses.
  • Researches how other journalism fellowships are run so that the Rhoden Fellowship stays competitive and current.
  • Help to maintain relationships with HBCUs involved in the program and seek out opportunities to connect with other HBCUs to promote the program.
  • Create a positive environment that fosters collaboration, dedication and teamwork among Fellows and faculty advisors.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of editorial experience as an editor or writer for an online publication.
  • Experience mentoring young writers
  • Is a self-starter who is capable of managing a heavy workload and has excellent time management skills.
  • Has clear communication skills and experience working within a cross-functional team.
  • Has high degree of competence in editing, writing and reporting.
  • Has solid news journalism experience and news judgment.
  • Has understanding of HTML and related Web-authoring tools and software.
  • Has strong English grammar and excellent organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Well versed in African-American history
  • Relationship with the various HBCUs
  • 4 years of editorial experience.
  • Has good understanding of the market positioning and strategies of digital content delivery.

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in journalism, communications, online/multimedia or related field and a minimum of three years' direct professional editorial and/or reporting experience OR a high school diploma and a suitable* combination of related training and experience.
